Quiz Security – Prevent Cheating & Protect Data | Uplup

Protect your quiz from spam and fraudulent submissions. Cap how many times each person can take it, block suspicious traffic, and restrict access by country and U.S. state.

Accessing Security Settings

Security lives in the left sidebar of the quiz builder, alongside Questions and Design.

  1. Open your quiz in the builder (Create tab).
  2. In the left sidebar, click the Security accordion (below Design).
  3. The panel expands inline to reveal three sections: Submission Limits, Spam Protection, and Country Restrictions. A fourth section, U.S. State Restrictions, appears automatically once the United States is in scope.

Submission Limits

Cap how many times each person can take your quiz. The limit is enforced server-side and cannot be bypassed.

Submission Limits uses a single conversational dropdown that completes the sentence “Each person can take the quiz…”. Choose from these presets:

  • once – each person can submit only one attempt
  • twice
  • 3 times
  • 5 times
  • 10 times
  • unlimited times (default for new quizzes — pick a Custom amount if you want to cap responses per user)
  • a custom amount… – reveals a number input where you can enter any value from 2 to 9,999

For retake-specific options like cooldown periods between attempts and best-score tracking, click the Open Quiz Settings link below the dropdown to jump straight to the Retakes tab in Quiz Settings.

Spam Protection

Block suspicious traffic with a three-button protection picker.

Protection Levels

  • Off – No spam protection. Every submission is accepted.
  • On (Recommended) – Blocks Tor exit nodes and IPs flagged for malicious activity. Balanced protection for most quizzes.
  • Strict – Maximum protection. Also blocks VPN connections, proxy servers, and data-center (non-residential) IPs.

Click What does each level block? to expand a per-level breakdown directly inside the panel.

Heads up: Strict mode may block legitimate users on corporate networks or privacy tools.

Allow VPN Connections

Below the level picker is an Allow VPN connections toggle. When enabled, users on a VPN can submit even when protection is on. The toggle is automatically disabled in Strict mode (Strict always blocks VPNs); switch back to “On” if you need to allow them.

Country Restrictions

Control which countries can access your quiz. Country Restrictions are gated to the Business plan or higher; on lower plans the controls are visible but disabled, with a Business badge in the section header.

  • Allow all countries – No geographic restrictions (default).
  • Only allow specific countries – Quiz is accessible only from the countries you select.
  • Block specific countries – Quiz is accessible everywhere except the countries you select.

Selecting “Only allow” or “Block” reveals a searchable list of every country with checkboxes. Use the search box at the top to filter the list.

U.S. State Restrictions

A separate U.S. State Restrictions section appears automatically when the United States is included in your country scope, that is:

  • You chose “Only allow specific countries” and ticked the United States, or
  • You chose “Block specific countries” and the United States is not in your blocked list.

Like Country Restrictions, this section is Business-plan only. The options are:

  • Allow all – No state-level filtering.
  • Allow some – Only the U.S. states you select can access the quiz.
  • Exclude some – All U.S. states except the ones you select can access the quiz.

“Allow some” and “Exclude some” each open a searchable, checkbox-based list of all 50 states plus territories like Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
