VS ProProfs Quiz Maker

Priced by the plan, not by the quiz taker.

ProProfs Quiz Maker is a heavyweight: 20+ question types, AI essay grading, proctoring, and auto-issued certificates. It bills by the active quiz taker though, sold in $19.99 blocks of 100, and that meter is the reason most people go hunting for a ProProfs Quiz Maker alternative. Uplup prices by plan instead: $29 a month covers 1,000 responses across unlimited quizzes, forms, and surveys. Both sites were checked today, and the verdict points both ways.

When to pick which

Pick Uplup when

  • You want a bill that stays put: $29 covers 1,000 responses a month, no per-taker blocks, no automatic plan bumps.
  • You want unlimited questions on the free plan, not a 12-question ceiling with 90 days of report history.
  • You run forms and surveys alongside quizzes without a $300-a-year add-on.
  • You want Zapier and n8n; ProProfs lists 13 integrations and Zapier is not among them.
  • You want the public API, webhooks, and Stripe payments from the $29 plan instead of an Elite tier.

Stay on ProProfs Quiz Maker when

  • You run timed or proctored exams: per-question timers, webcam capture, screen recording, and tab-switch detection; Uplup has none of them.
  • Your organization needs SSO through Okta, Azure AD, or LDAP; Uplup does not offer SSO.
  • Takers submit documents, images, audio, or video as answers; Uplup has no file-upload question types.
  • You need the LMS around the quiz: classrooms, question pools, certificates with renewal reminders, SCORM/xAPI.

The ProProfs pricing model, explained

ProProfs meters one thing: the active quiz taker, a unique person who takes any of your quizzes in a given month, sold in blocks of 100. All figures are USD from the live Business pricing tab.

  • Free: $0, forever. Unlimited quizzes and unlimited quiz takers, but each quiz maxes out at 12 questions (8 quiz plus 4 lead fields) and reports keep 90 days of history.
  • Essentials: $19.99 per 100 active quiz takers per month, $239.88 billed annually, hard ceiling of 300 takers a month.
  • Business: $39.99 per 100 active quiz takers per month, $479.88 billed annually, ceiling of 500 takers a month.
  • Business Complete Elite (their most-popular tag): $0.83 per active quiz taker per month, $9.96 per taker annually, unlimited takers, annual only. Home of white label, custom domain, the API, and SSO.
  • Vertical Elite plans: Certifications and Hiring each run $1 per candidate or applicant per month ($12 billed annually), 100-person monthly minimum, annual only.
  • Education: K-12 Teacher at $4 per teacher per month ($48 billed annually) for up to 150 students; School & District at $0.25 per student per month with custom capacity and unlimited teachers.
  • ProProfs Learning Suite: starts at $499 per month, annual only, bundling Quiz Maker with Training Maker, WebinarNinja, Survey Maker, and Knowledge Base.
  • Add-ons at $300 a year each: White Label branding removal, e-commerce, and web forms and surveys (Survey Maker Business, 500 responses a month).
  • Uplup, for contrast: $0 with 50 responses, $29 with 1,000, $79 with 10,000 plus metered overage. Flat plans, and free quizzes run at full length.

Their FAQ says exceeding a cap never blocks new takers; the plan is adjusted upward instead. Paid plans carry a 15-day money-back guarantee with no proration for months already started. Buttons say Try Now, but no trial length is stated for Quiz Maker plans anywhere on the site. They take Visa, MasterCard, and Amex, not PayPal.

Stay put

HR and compliance teams running audited training

The job ProProfs was built around. Auto-issued certificates with expiry dates and renewal reminders, SCORM and xAPI, SSO through Okta or Azure AD, full proctoring, and unlimited admins cover the compliance loop at $0.83 per taker on Business Complete Elite. Uplup carries none of the exam-security or certification layer. Stay.

Either works

Teachers running classroom quizzes on a school budget

ProProfs treats education as a first-class market: the K-12 plan is $4 per teacher a month for up to 150 students, and the free plan allows unlimited takers if you can live with 12 questions per quiz. Uplup’s free plan runs full-length quizzes with no question ceiling, but caps you at 50 responses a month. Short quizzes for many students lean ProProfs; longer quizzes for a class or two lean Uplup. Run one unit on each.

Pick Uplup

Small businesses turning quizzes into leads

A lead quiz that works is one whose taker count climbs, and on ProProfs that climb is the bill: every block of 100 takers is another $19.99, with Essentials stopping at 300. Uplup’s $29 plan absorbs 1,000 responses, connects to 23 CRM and email tools plus Zapier and n8n, and puts a skippable or required email gate before results. A growth channel should not sit on a per-taker meter.

Pick Uplup

Course creators quizzing the audience they already teach

Uplup’s AI builds a quiz straight from the course PDF, a lesson URL, or a document, and unlimited quizzes on every plan means one per module. Stripe payments on forms and webhooks arrive at $29. One exception: if you sell access to the quiz itself, ProProfs has a dedicated sell-quizzes flow with Stripe at a 0% ProProfs fee, and that job is theirs.

Stay put

Hiring managers screening applicants with timed skills tests

Screening tests need what marketing quizzes never do: per-question time limits, tab-switch detection, webcam capture, ID checks, and work samples submitted as files. ProProfs ships all of it; its Hiring Elite plan runs $1 per applicant with a 100-applicant monthly minimum. Uplup has no timers, proctoring, or file uploads, so for anything a candidate might cheat on, ProProfs wins.

Where each one earns it

The case for Uplup

  • A predictable bill: $29 covers 1,000 responses, while ProProfs Essentials buys 100 takers per block with a 300 cap
  • Every question type on the free tier, 50 responses a month, and no 12-question ceiling
  • Forms and surveys ride along with quizzes on every plan, unlimited, with no add-on required
  • Zapier, n8n, webhooks, and the public REST API from $29; ProProfs keeps its API on Elite
  • Four scoring modes, card-style one-question-at-a-time delivery, and a skippable or required email gate
  • AI generation from prompts, URLs, PDFs, images, or documents, with unlimited AI on Pro

What both ship

  • AI quiz generation from documents, URLs, and images
  • Free plans you can launch a real quiz on
  • Scored, graded, and personality-outcome quiz types
  • Branching and conditional logic
  • Lead capture before results, handed to HubSpot, Salesforce, and MailChimp
  • Instant results pages with custom feedback per score range

No spin: where ProProfs Quiz Maker wins

  • SSO via SAML, LDAP, Okta, and Azure AD on Elite plans; Uplup has no SSO
  • Per-question and whole-quiz timers plus a proctoring suite: webcam photos, screen recording, tab-switch detection
  • File, audio, and video answers through submit-document, audio-response, and video-response question types
  • Report exports to PDF as well as CSV and Excel; Uplup does not generate PDFs
  • A built-in LMS: classrooms, question banks, certificates with renewal reminders, SCORM and xAPI, 70+ languages

Our straight answer

Price this per hundred people. On ProProfs Essentials, 100 active quiz takers cost $19.99 and the plan stops at 300; on Uplup Pro, $29 buys 1,000 pooled responses. That makes Uplup the plain call for lead generation, marketing quizzes, and any use where success means more respondents. Flip it for secure assessment: if you need proctoring, per-question timers, SSO, certificates, or file-upload answers, ProProfs ships all of that and Uplup ships none of it, and Business Complete Elite at $0.83 per taker is a fair price for the stack. Choose by which of those two jobs your quiz actually does.

Switching from ProProfs Quiz Maker, end to end

A ProProfs migration is mostly grading logic and integrations, and both travel well; the real planning goes into the exam features Uplup does not carry.

  1. 1

Pull your report history while you still can

Export quiz reports from ProProfs to CSV or Excel before changing anything. Two rules make timing matter: the free plan keeps only 90 days of report history, and downgrading from paid deletes stored attempts and score data. Get the archive out while your paid plan is active.

  2. 2

Regenerate quizzes from the same source material

Feed the same PDFs, URLs, or documents you built ProProfs quizzes from into Uplup’s AI generator for a fast first draft, then tidy in the builder. Map question types as you go, and list the ones with no equivalent (file, audio, and video answers) so nothing silently disappears.

  3. 3

Remap grading, results, and the email gate

ProProfs auto-grading translates to Uplup’s scored mode with per-question points and partial credit, pass marks become pass/fail thresholds, and personality quizzes move to personality outcomes. Decide per quiz whether the email gate before results is required or skippable. Certificates do not carry over; a results page plus a follow-up email is the nearest substitute.

  4. 4

Rewire the handoff to your marketing stack

ProProfs pushes leads to 13 named tools; reconnect the same lists and tags via Uplup’s 23 native CRM and email integrations, with Zapier, n8n, webhooks, or the public API as the fallback on the $29 plan. If ProProfs built you a custom integration, confirm the Zapier or webhook route covers it before cutover.

  5. 5

Overlap for a week, then cancel against the renewal date

Swap your links to the Uplup versions while the ProProfs quizzes stay live as the fallback, and compare completions and captured leads for a week. Then time the cancellation: ProProfs charges in full months and does not prorate refunds, so cancel just ahead of the next billing date rather than mid-cycle.

Common questions

Yes, and the free plan is generous on volume: unlimited quizzes and unlimited quiz takers, forever. The catch is depth. Each quiz stops at 12 questions (8 quiz plus 4 lead fields), reports keep 90 days of history, and downgrading from paid deletes stored attempts and scores, though the quizzes survive. Uplup flips the trade: 50 responses a month, but quizzes as long as you like with all four scoring modes.
