What ikigai means, and what the Venn diagram gets wrong

Ikigai is a Japanese word usually translated as a reason for being. In everyday use it describes the small, ordinary sources of meaning in a life: a craft, a garden, a morning routine, the people you cook for. It was never a career formula.

The four-circle Venn diagram you have probably seen, where purpose sits at the intersection of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what pays, is a Western adaptation rather than the original idea. This quiz stays closer to the source. It asks about the days that already satisfy you and helps you name why, which is a humbler and more accurate use of the word.

Ten questions about ordinary days, not five year plans

None of the ten questions ask where you see yourself in a decade. They look backward and sideways instead: at the end of a workday that felt quietly satisfying, at the afternoon you remember most fondly from age ten, at the kind of day that would drain you most.

One question reads, "You glance at the clock and two hours have vanished without you noticing. What were you most likely doing?" Another hands you a fully funded year off and asks what you are actually doing by month three. The last one asks which of four things you would secretly trade a pay raise for.

Skipping is switched off, so every answer feeds the result, but takers can step back to an earlier question if a later one changes their mind, and a progress indicator shows how far they have come. There are no timers and no right answers; each option quietly speaks for one of the four directions.
