Step 1: Access the Quiz Builder
From your Uplup dashboard, click the Create button in the left sidebar and choose Quiz to open the quiz builder.
You’ll first pick a quiz format (conversational one-question-per-screen or classic multi-question layout), then choose how to start building.
Step 2: Choose Your Starting Point
You have three ways to start building your quiz:
Option A: Start from Scratch
Choose Blank Quiz to start with an empty canvas. You can pick or change your scoring mode at any time from Quiz Settings.
Option B: Use a Template
Browse the template library for pre-built quizzes. Templates include questions, scoring, and styling that you can customize.
Option C: Build with AI
Describe your quiz topic in plain language and the AI quiz builder will generate a complete quiz for you. You can also use the AI Assistant button (top-right of the builder) anytime to add or refine questions later.
Step 3: Add Questions
The quiz builder has three main areas:
- Left Sidebar – An Add Page button at the top, followed by an accordion with Questions, Design, and Security sections. The Questions section lists every question type you can drop into the quiz.
- Center Canvas – Live preview where you write the question, add answer options, and reorder fields.
- Right Panel – Two stacked sections per selected field: Scoring (correct answer, points, partial credit, hint/explanation) and Field Settings (display style, error message, required toggle, etc.).

To add a question, click any question type in the left sidebar (or drag it onto the canvas).
Common Question Types
- Multiple Choice – Pick one correct option from a list
- Checkbox – Allow multiple correct answers (with optional partial credit)
- Yes / No – Two-option toggle question
- Dropdown – Pick one option from a long list
- Picture Choice – Visual answer options with images
- Short Answer / Long Answer – Free-text responses (matched against an accepted answer)
- Number – Numeric input with optional range
- Ranking – Order items by preference
See the Question Types Reference for the full list.
Step 4: Set Correct Answers & Points
Click any question on the canvas to select it. The right panel switches to show Scoring and Field Settings for that question.
Setting the Correct Answer
- Type your question text in the question field on the canvas
- Add answer options (click + Add Option to add more)
- In the right panel, mark the correct answer (radio button for single-answer fields, checkbox for multi-select)
Setting Point Values
Each question is worth 1 point by default. Change the Points value in the right panel to weight questions differently.
Partial Credit (Multi-Select)
For Checkbox questions, toggle Partial credit to award proportional points when a respondent gets some, but not all, correct options.
Adding Hints & Explanations (Optional)
Click + Add hint or explanation in the right panel to include a hint shown during the quiz or an explanation shown after the answer is submitted.
Step 5: Configure Scoring
Click the quiz type badge at the top of the builder (e.g. Scored Quiz) to open the Quiz Settings modal. The first tab, Scoring, lets you change the scoring mode.

Scoring Mode Options
- Scored – Show the total points earned (e.g. “8 / 10 points”)
- Percentage – Show the score as a percentage of total available points (e.g. “80%”)
- Pass / Fail – Show pass or fail based on a threshold you set
- Personality – Match users to personality types or outcomes (no right/wrong answers)
For Pass/Fail mode, set the Passing Score as a percentage or absolute point value. For Personality mode, define personality types and map each answer option to one of them.
For detailed options, see Quiz Scoring & Grading.
Step 6: Customize the Design
Open the Design section in the left sidebar accordion to access styling options.

For detailed options, see Quiz Styling & Themes.
