Table of Contents

Scoring Modes

Uplup quizzes have four scoring modes. The mode controls how Uplup calculates the result and what the quiz taker sees on the result screen.

Scored (Points)

Display total points earned out of total possible.

  • Display: “You scored 8/10 points”
  • Best for: Trivia quizzes, gamified assessments

Percentage

Show the score as a percentage of total points.

  • Display: “You scored 80%”
  • Best for: Standardized testing, knowledge assessments

Pass/Fail

Display a pass or fail result based on a threshold score.

  • Display: “PASSED” or “FAILED” badge
  • Best for: Certification, compliance testing

Personality

Match users to outcomes based on answer patterns (no right or wrong).

  • Display: Matched personality type with description
  • Best for: “What type are you?” quizzes, product finders

Choosing the Scoring Mode

  1. Open your quiz in the builder.
  2. Click the quiz-type badge in the top toolbar (e.g. Scored Quiz) to open Quiz Settings.
  3. The Scoring tab is selected by default. Click Change to reveal all four modes, then pick one.
  4. Click Save Changes.

Setting Point Values

By default, each question is worth 1 point. You can change this per question to weight some questions more heavily than others.

Changing the Point Value

  1. Select a question in the builder.
  2. In the right settings panel, find the Scoring section.
  3. Type the new value into the Points field.

When to Use Different Point Values

  • Harder questions: worth more points (e.g. 3 vs 1)
  • Important topics: higher point value
  • Bonus questions: extra points

Partial Credit

Partial credit is a per-question setting (not a separate scoring mode) that awards partial points when the answer has multiple correct options.

Where Partial Credit Applies

  • Checkbox questions (multiple correct answers)
  • Picture Choice when multiple selections are allowed
  • Ranking questions (points per item placed in the correct position)

Partial Credit Modes

When Partial credit is toggled on for a Checkbox or multi-select Picture Choice question, you can pick one of two modes:

  • Proportional scoring: Score = (correct selections / total correct) × points. Selecting an incorrect option does not subtract points, but it also does not earn any.
  • No penalty for wrong: Award points for each correct selection without deducting for incorrect ones.

Enabling Partial Credit

  1. Select a Checkbox or multi-select question.
  2. In the right panel, scroll to the Answer section after marking the correct options.
  3. Toggle Partial credit on.
  4. Pick Proportional scoring or No penalty for wrong from the dropdown.

Example

Question worth 4 points: “Select all vowels: A, B, C, E, I”

  • Correct answers: A, E, I (3 items)
  • User selects: A, E (2 correct, 0 incorrect)
  • With Proportional scoring: 2/3 × 4 = 2.67 points
  • Without partial credit: 0 points (must get all correct)

Pass/Fail Settings

When the scoring mode is Pass/Fail, you set the threshold the quiz taker has to reach in order to pass. Uplup defaults the passing score to 70 and the type to Percent (%).

Setting the Passing Score

  1. In Quiz Settings → Scoring, set the scoring mode to Pass/Fail.
  2. Enter the Passing Score value (e.g. 70).
  3. Pick the type from the dropdown: Percent (%) or Points.

Pass/Fail Display

Quiz takers see:

  • PASSED (green badge) if the score meets or exceeds the threshold
  • FAILED (red badge) if the score is below the threshold
  • The score percentage shows alongside the badge

Passing Score (Pass / Fail Mode)

The Pass / Fail quiz type uses a single passing score threshold. Quiz takers see either a Pass or a Fail outcome on the results screen depending on whether their score meets the threshold.

Setting the Passing Score

  1. Open Quiz Settings by clicking the quiz-type pill in the top toolbar.
  2. On the Scoring tab, choose Pass / Fail.
  3. Set the Passing Score value (default 70%). You can also choose between Percent (%) and Points as the threshold type.

Per-tier custom result pages with multiple score ranges are not currently configurable in the builder. Quiz takers see a single result screen with their score and pass/fail status; you can control what’s shown on that screen via Quiz Results Settings.
