Uplup offers two distinct form presentation modes: Classic and Conversational. This guide explains the differences between them and helps you choose the right mode for your specific use case.

Table of Contents

Overview: Two Ways to Present Your Form

Both modes use the same form builder and field types – the difference is how the form is presented to users when they fill it out. You can switch between modes at any time without losing your form content.

Classic Mode: Traditional form layout with all fields visible on the page at once.

Conversational Mode: One question at a time, creating a chat-like experience.

Classic Mode Explained

Classic mode displays your form in a traditional layout where all fields are visible on the page simultaneously. Users can see the entire form, scroll through it, and fill out fields in any order.

Classic Mode Features

  • All fields visible – Users see every field at once
  • Flexible navigation – Users can fill fields in any order
  • Quick scanning – Easy to preview the entire form before starting
  • Multi-column layouts – Place fields side-by-side for compact forms
  • Traditional experience – Familiar to most users

Layout Options in Classic Mode

Classic mode supports flexible layouts:

  • Single column – Fields stacked vertically (default)
  • Two columns – Place two fields side-by-side
  • Mixed layouts – Combine single and multi-column rows

Conversational Mode Explained

Conversational mode presents one question at a time, guiding users through the form step-by-step. This creates an engaging, chat-like experience that feels more personal and less overwhelming.

Conversational Mode Features

  • One question at a time – Focused, distraction-free experience
  • Progress indicator – Shows users how far along they are
  • Keyboard navigation – Press Enter to advance to the next question
  • Larger typography – Questions displayed prominently
  • Smooth transitions – Animated transitions between questions
  • Mobile-optimized – Excellent experience on phones and tablets

Navigation in Conversational Mode

Users navigate conversational forms using:

  • Next/Back buttons – Click to move between questions
  • Enter key – Press Enter to advance (after answering)
  • Progress bar – Visual indicator of completion progress

When to Use Classic Mode

Classic mode is ideal for:

Short, Simple Forms

Contact forms, newsletter signups, and quick feedback forms work well in Classic mode because users can see everything at once and complete them quickly.

Data Entry Forms

When users need to enter lots of structured data (addresses, account details, order information), Classic mode lets them see all fields and work efficiently.

Reference-Heavy Forms

If users need to refer back to previous answers while filling out the form, Classic mode makes this easy since all fields remain visible.

Desktop-Primary Audiences

For users primarily on desktop computers with large screens, Classic mode efficiently uses the available space.

Best Use Cases for Classic Mode

  • Contact forms
  • Registration forms
  • Order forms
  • Application forms
  • Account creation
  • Checkout forms

When to Use Conversational Mode

Conversational mode is ideal for:

Surveys and Feedback

The one-question-at-a-time format keeps respondents focused and often increases completion rates for surveys.

Lead Generation

Conversational forms feel more personal and less like a form, which can increase conversion rates for lead capture.

Long Forms

Breaking a long form into individual questions prevents users from feeling overwhelmed when they first see it.

Mobile-First Audiences

Conversational mode provides an excellent mobile experience with large touch targets and minimal scrolling.

Quizzes

Quizzes naturally fit the conversational format, presenting one question at a time for a game-like experience.

Best Use Cases for Conversational Mode

  • Customer surveys
  • Lead generation forms
  • Feedback collection
  • Quizzes and assessments
  • Onboarding flows
  • Interview/screening forms

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I preview both modes before publishing?

Yes! Use the preview feature to see how your form looks in either mode. You can switch modes and preview as many times as you like before publishing.

Does mode affect my form data or submissions?

No. Both modes collect the same data and store it the same way. Your submissions dashboard and exports work identically regardless of which mode you use.

Can I use conditional logic in both modes?

Yes! Conditional logic works in both Classic and Conversational modes. In Conversational mode, hidden questions are simply skipped.

Which mode has better completion rates?

It depends on your use case. Generally, Conversational mode tends to have higher completion rates for surveys and lead generation, while Classic mode works better for transactional forms where users want to see everything upfront.

Can I use page breaks in Conversational mode?

Page breaks are not needed in Conversational mode since each question is already on its own “page.” If you switch a multi-page Classic form to Conversational, the page breaks are ignored.
