Overview: Two Ways to Present Your Form
Both layouts use the same form builder and field types. The difference is how the form is presented to respondents when they fill it out. You select the layout when you create the form.
Classic (“All on one page”): Traditional form layout with fields visible together on a scrollable page.
Conversational (“One at a time”): One question per screen, like a chat.
Classic Mode Explained
Classic mode displays your form in a traditional layout. Respondents scroll through the page and can answer fields in any order. If you add Form Pages, the form is split into multiple pages with Next/Back navigation.

Classic Mode Features
- Fields visible together – Respondents see all fields on the current page at once
- Flexible navigation – Respondents can answer fields in any order on each page
- Quick scanning – Easy to preview the page before starting
- Multi-page support – Use Add Page → Form Page to split a long form across multiple pages
- Familiar experience – The layout most respondents are used to
Layout Style Options
From the Design accordion in the left sidebar you can pick a container style for your form (container, seamless, or split) and adjust form width. The split layout (image on one side, form on the other) is available in Conversational mode only.
Conversational Mode Explained
Conversational mode (internally called card-form) shows one question at a time. It creates a focused, chat-like flow with smooth transitions between questions.

Conversational Mode Features
- One question at a time – Focused, distraction-free experience
- Progress indicator – Shows respondents how far along they are
- Keyboard navigation – Press Enter to advance to the next question
- Larger typography – Each question is displayed prominently
- Smooth transitions – Animated transitions between questions
- Mobile-optimized – Excellent on phones and tablets
- Split layout option – Available only in Conversational mode (image on one side, question on the other)
Navigation in Conversational Mode
Respondents move through a Conversational form using:
- Next/Back buttons – Click to move between questions
- Enter key – Press Enter to advance after answering
- Progress bar – Visual indicator of completion progress

When to Use Classic Mode
Classic mode is a good fit for:
Short, Simple Forms
Contact forms, newsletter signups, and quick feedback forms work well in Classic mode because respondents can see everything at once and complete them quickly.
Data Entry Forms
When respondents need to enter lots of structured data (addresses, account details, order information), Classic mode lets them see all fields and work efficiently.
Reference-Heavy Forms
If respondents need to refer back to previous answers while filling out the form, Classic mode keeps the surrounding fields in view.
Desktop-Primary Audiences
For respondents primarily on desktop computers with large screens, Classic mode efficiently uses the available space.
Best Use Cases for Classic Mode
- Contact forms
- Registration forms
- Order forms
- Application forms
- Account creation
- Checkout forms
When to Use Conversational Mode
Conversational mode is a good fit for:
Surveys and Feedback
The one-question-at-a-time format keeps respondents focused and often increases completion rates for surveys.
Lead Generation
Conversational forms feel more personal and less like a form, which can help conversion rates for lead capture.
Long Forms
Breaking a long form into individual questions prevents respondents from feeling overwhelmed when they first see it.
Mobile-First Audiences
Conversational mode provides an excellent mobile experience with large touch targets and minimal scrolling.
Quizzes
Quizzes naturally fit the conversational format. New quizzes default to Conversational mode in Uplup.
Best Use Cases for Conversational Mode
- Customer surveys
- Lead generation forms
- Feedback collection
- Quizzes and assessments
- Onboarding flows
- Interview/screening forms
Choosing a Mode
You pick the layout once, when the form is created. The picker is shown right after you choose your build method (from scratch, from a template, or with AI):
- From your dashboard, click the Create button and choose Form or Quiz
- Pick a build method (scratch, template, or AI)
- On the “Pick a layout” screen, choose either:
- “One at a time” (Conversational, marked Most popular)
- “All on one page” (Classic)
- Continue building your form with the selected layout
Note: The layout is set when the form is created and is not changed from a toggle in the editor. If you want to test the other layout, create a second form and rebuild it there. Both layouts share the same field types, themes, and integrations, so the choice mainly affects how respondents experience the form.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the layout affect my form data or submissions?
No. Both layouts collect the same data and store it the same way. Your Results tab and CSV exports work identically regardless of which layout you use.
Can I use conditional logic in both layouts?
Yes. Conditional logic works in both Classic and Conversational layouts. In Conversational mode, hidden questions are simply skipped.
Which layout has better completion rates?
It depends on your use case. Generally, Conversational mode tends to have higher completion rates for surveys and lead generation, while Classic mode works well for transactional forms where respondents want to see everything upfront.
Do page breaks work in Conversational mode?
Conversational mode already shows one question per screen, so additional Form Pages are not needed for navigation. Add Page is most useful in Classic mode when you want to split a longer form into separate pages.
Can I switch a form’s layout after I create it?
The layout is selected at creation time. There is no in-editor switcher to flip an existing form between Classic and Conversational. If you want to compare both for the same content, duplicate or recreate the form in the other layout.
